Born in Fukuoka prefecture in 1964.
A Seeker of Manga and an Animated Cartoon.
From his childhood he was fond of books, manga and animated cartoons.
In 1977, he was exposed to the “animation boom” occurring right before and after the public showing of the movie “Space Battleship Yamato” (Space Blazer), and he indulged in animation even more.
After his days as an editor of various magazines and books, he contributed to many magazines in addition while working for a company. He has continued his lifework since childhood–his research on manga and anime cartoons.
He is friendly with many people concerned with manga and anime. His activities range widely: planning and management of one-person exhibitions and other events, advisor for the composition of DVD or republication of manga, writing on web site, and others.
He wrote and edited “Zusetsu TV Anime Zensho (TV Animated Cartoon Complete Works)” (Hara shobo / under the name of Makoto Misono).Other works include commentaries for “Dream for Children of the World” and “Anime Producer Masaaki Sagisu” (Bunka-sha /cowritten by Osamu Tajima and Masayasu Sagisu.), interviews for “Kazuo Komatsubara; A Book of Animation Pictures” (Tokyu Bunka Agency), manga scenarios for “A Pond Skater’s Song” (Akihiro Kanayama), etc.
In 2018, he published “Densetsu no Anime Creators (The Legendary Animated Cartoon Creators)” Vol. 1, a collection of his serial interviews in “Mandarake ZENBU” from 1999.

In May 2018, “Densetsu no Anime Creators (The Legendary Animated Cartoon Creators)” (Mandarake Publisher) was published. It is a book consisting of serial interviews with anime creators since 1999 in the catalogue “Mandarake ZENBU”.
I will write down some of the creators featured in this book according to the table of contents. The names are a lineup of those creators who have made the backbone of Japanese animation from the pioneering days to its prosperity.Of course, these are only a few people among the interviewees during the 19 years.

It was quite some time ago when I asked Mr. Hoshi to talk for this blog.At the time, he declined, saying that he isn’t an enthusiastic collector,But he seemed to give in to my tenacious pleas, and he accepted under the condition that I would coordinate it with the publication “Densetsu no anime creators”. But after that, he continued to say that he didn’t stick to things and that he did not know what he should talk about.

Neither collectors nor enthusiasts are restrictive, and they are diverse.Aside from Mr. Hoshi’s inclination to be self-limited, I considered that I would be satisfied with anything that Mr. Hoshi chose to talk about.

Looking back, I think that I persisted so much because I read an article on Mr. Noboru Ishiguro in Mr. Hoshi’s blog “Thanks to Animation”.
Mr. Ishiguro is a well-known director of ” Battleship Yamato.” He boxed and sent a lot of materials on hand to Mr. Hoshi, I read. Furthermore, Mr. Ishiguro continued to encourage Mr. Hoshi, saying that this anime interview would become excellent material in times to come.
“Space Battleship Yamato” created an anime-boom all over Japan and changed the status of anime cartoons fundamentally.Its director selected Mr. Hoshi as the person to entrust his things with, and this impressed me deeply.
I think that was the moment that I wanted Mr. Hoshi to absolutely appear in this blog.

In May 1999, just before Mr. Hoshi started his interviews, he published a book.

Mr. Hoshi wrote as follows in the preface of this book.
” How did “TV animated cartoons” start? Did Japanese TV animated cartoons appear suddenly, completely unrelated to previous animation history? Why did “Yamato” and “Gundam” capture the heart of the youth? Where was the origin of Hayao Miyazaki? What did original video animated cartoons bring to the TV animated cartoons? And why did “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” said to be the largest hit of the 90s, enter the stage ?……. We may be able to get the answers to these questions by looking at history.”

This book commands an aerial view of the 35 years of TV animated cartoon history from the times of TOEI’s long anime works, considered the prehistory of animated cartoons.
All chapters are placed in a broad prospective, including the change of mechanic and the special techniques, writer theories and so on.
This book is a must-read to know the history of animated cartoon.

This ability of broad perspective and synthesizing…. I think that’s Makoto Hoshi’s true worth. On the other hand, Mr. Hoshi’s attention is always turned to individuals who lived in those times. It is Mr. Hoshi’s consistent attitude to constitute the larger history from individual people and things.

This time, Mr. Hoshi brought various things along and showed me according to this blog’s theme.
Someone who knows Mr. Hoshi ordinarily may be appalled at me for have made this expert talk of such basic things, accusing me of being too much of a novice?
But it will be most difficult to find a person who can talk about anime creators’ ability in accordance with thing as clearly as Mr. Hoshi.
I will just leave the words of Mr. Hoshi, who has lived with animated cartoons, to show the readers as is. Please enjoy.

In 1949, he was born in Ninohe-City in Iwate Prefecture.
After graduating from Daito-Bunka-University, he entered “New Design Center “in Shimbashi,Tokyo.
He was mainly in charge of picture conte of TV.
In 1971, he was invited by Eiichi Murano with who he had become acquainted with during college days to join a dojinshi circle “Kijin-Club”
(dojinshi: publication aimed at a hobby, or a fanzine)
He released “Miiko-Metamorphosis””The Adventure of Kotono””Super NYANNYAN”etc.
After leaving the company and working as a freelancer, he opened the secondhand comics shop “Natsuman-King” (the present name “Seiwado”) in Shinkoiwa, Tokyo.
He presides over a dojinshi circle “Apple-BOX-Create”.
He has published “Shonen-Natsuman-Oh””Manga-Ichi”, reprints of many old comics, and so.

Mr. Takahashi says
“During my dojinshi activity, Osamu Tezuka died. Hibari Misora and Yujiro Ishihara died.
The economic bubble burst, and the Showa era was over. I retired from the work of picture conte, opened a secondhand bookstore, and 30 years have passed…”

Mr. Ikeda is a fan of Aarin(Ayaka Sasaki), a member of idol group Momoiro Clover Z.
He began to wear pink clothes, saying that pink, her official member color, pumps him up.
During one New Year’s holiday, he went to his wife’s parents’ house, wearing pink clothes to invigorate himself before greeting them.
This was a crazy judgment. His common sense was paralyzed. The father-in-law looked at his son-in-law wearing pink and shuddered.
He said to his daughter, “I can’t go out together with Makoto wearing such clothes.”
The daughter, sighing, made her husband in pink change his clothes. In fact, the daughter was already paralyzed, too.

Mr. Ikeda told me to write about him and MomoClo (Momoiro Clover Z) from early on.
Although I was once steamrollered into writing it, I was worried about the reaction of my acquaintances and I was not able to step forward to post the Monogatari of Mr. Ikeda’s photo collection of MomoClo readily.
At the very time when I was hesitating, I heard the news that Momoka Ariyasu, a member of MomoClo, would leave this group.
It was said that she would retire from the company and leave the entertainment world, saying “I want to become a normal girl”.
I didn’t even image that Momoka, who had great talent, would ever disappear. During the Momo-Clo concerts I went with Mr. Ikeda, I always cheered for her.
The sense of loss is big, and the attitude of the members who are left behind and try hard to look forward touches my heart.

Unexpectedly, the objective this time became to look back on MomoClo’s history and wish them good luck.

I must devote myself into this beyond all sense of shame.

Though I don’t want to call Mr. Ikeda a complete fool, I can’t deny that he is a little foolish. I will present you with his Aarin photo collection this time.

In 1953, he was born in Kyoto.
He entered Mandarake in 1984, after Hitachi-sikki-kougu-company etc..
In 1986, he started Mitsuteru-Yokoyama-club with Mr.Kenichi Eguchi, Mr.Yoshinobu Horii, and they published the private magazine “Ochs”. From his enormous collections, he provided the materials for many publictions, including ” Bessatsu Taiyo / Mitsuteru Yokoyama Manga Taizen” (1998).
He has also made an effort for reprinting. He has greatly contributed to the spread of the works of Yokoyama and has laid foundation of references for researches.
In 2014, he published the memorial book for Mitsuteru Yokoyama birth 80th anniversary “My Forevermore” (edited by Mr.Keisuke Yui) . At present he holds the gathering as a central figure of Yokoyama fans and continues standing by many fan’s activities.

Profile

He was born in Hokkaido in 1968.
He had a longing for a hero in his childhood and was actively involved as an Air Self-Defense Force Official ; a member of rescue party,. And then, he started his new career as a kickboxer in 1990.
He got an ” All-Japan kick boxing rookie of the year title” in the following year. He took the second place of Japan, and the third place of the world, but retired due to injury.
In 2001, he started making figures in the characters departments of CSS Inc.
Next year he became independent and established CCP : Character Contents Production, and incorporated it.
He is the strongest company-president who continues making figures with fighting spirits.

“A Toy player” born in 196X.
In the childhood, he awakened to a toy by the fateful encounter with a miniature car.
In the boyhood, he flowered as a toy collector, through gathering of SF toys of Takara (:Japanese toy maker).
Afterwards, he has advanced his toy road intently.
Although he was temporally addicted to the dark side of some Action Figures, he returned to the essence of toys by the Force of a Doll love.
Now he devotes himself to collecting of items for a museum.

Born in Osaka, 1964.
As a child, he was addicted to collecting cards and bromides related to Tokusatsu and baseball.
In adolescence, he devoted himself to the Beetles.
After working for a record shop, he opened <Kinkees> in Neyagawa city, Osaka in 2000. He has sold secondhand records and so-called <paper articles>, cards and bromides, mostly of the 1970’s.
He receives great trust from enthusiasts all over Japan, and receives many inquiries from TV programs and some magazines.
The store in Neyagawa is called “a holy place” which enthusiasts, who have interest in that field, can’t help but visit at least once.

Makoto Ikeda

He was born in 1961, in Shizuoka prefecture.When he was in elementary school, he devoted himself to reading a boys’-magazine “Bouken-ou”, collecting Kamen-rider cards, and pretending to be Kamen-rider or some “Kaijin” on the hill with citrus trees behind his home.He studied Japanese literature in university and in graduate school. Now, while teaching Japanese in several prep-schools, he studies Tokusatsu and works as a writer.

Mr.Ikeda loves “Bouken-ou” and other old magazines. After the earthquake in 2011, He said he would “evacuate them for safety”,and sent cardboard boxes filled with his magazines to several places, even to the house of his wife’s parents.His wife’s father was surprised at the contents of the cardboard box. Although he had expected the content to be a little troubling, he saw a lot of magazines with the same cover and felt his son-in-law was eccentric.
He called his daughter and asked her,”There are many identical magazines in this box; is Makoto in his right mind?”His daughter sighed and replied, “Yes, he is all right.”However, in reality, even his daughter couldn’t believe firmly that her husband was in his right mind.

Satte Takahashi was born in Saitama prefecture on July 17,1966. It’s just the day to start the broadcasting of “Ultraman”. A dealer in secondhand store and a writer.

He has been a close acquaintance with Manga, Anime, and Tokusatsu since childhood.When he was in university, he started working part-time in asecondhand bookstore, and he became deeply involved in the field.
Following this, he became one of the leading members of the Hirayama team by Toru Hirayama( a famous producer with Toei company).he was entrusted with the management of the warehouse.
He then became acquainted with Mr. Tetsuya Tsutsumi at an event and hit it off with him instantly. Placing Mr. Tsutsumi in a representative position, he started   < The fantastic & scientific secondhandstore Empy-ya >, and ran the business.
Using encyclopedic knowledge, he is excellent at understanding the positioning of each article at a glance.When he participated in a project to give commentaries, he successfully took charge of every remaining part that other people were unwilling to handle.With a great insight into the value of articles and his activity, he has an outstanding ability to deal with every obstacle, which has made it possible for him to sometimes work behind the scene as key person.
After Empy-ya was forced closed due to urban development, he has been active mainly as a writer. Besides, He became involved in a manga production, a toy maker and so on, he works underground deeply and quietly.

In 1960, Tetsuya Tsutsumi was born in Tokyo, raised in Saitama prefecture.
He finished at The Tokyo-designer-school.
A researcher and a writer for Tokusatsu.
He mainly writes on the subject of the special effects drama in Showa-period, such as ” Kamen-Rider “that the Toeiworks producer,Tohru Hirayama whom Tsutsumi has respected created.

In the elementary school days, Tsutsumi was hooked on collecting Kamen-Rider cards.
After he grew up, he restarted collecting, through the fanzine, published his first work “Kamen-Rider card” in 1993.
Tsutsumi established the classification of Kamen-Rider cards, laid the philological foundation for the study, solidified the position of the leading authority in this field.
In addition to Kamen-Rider cards, he has continued the study and collection of paper articles : premium cards of various snacks, mini-cards and the five yen bromaides sold in an old fashioned penny candy store.
